GONORRHEA AND ITS CHARACTERISTIC SYMPTOMS

What is Gonorrhea?

Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, affecting the genital tract, throat, or rectum. It is transmitted through vaginal, anal, or oral sex, or can be spread from the genital area to the eyes via contaminated hands.

Consequences of Gonorrhea

If left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women and infertility in both men and women. Symptoms typically appear within 3 to 5 days after exposure to the infection.

Characteristic Symptoms of Gonorrhea

    • Women: Yellow or green vaginal discharge (similar to pus); pain during intercourse; abdominal pain; or dysuria.

    • Men: Dysuria; frequent urination; purulent discharge from the penis; anal discomfort; or testicular pain during urination.

While most men with gonorrhea exhibit noticeable symptoms, many women may be asymptomatic, especially if the infection is in the throat.

Prevention of Gonorrhea Transmission

Consistent and correct use of condoms during sexual activity is the most effective method to prevent gonorrhea and unintended pregnancies.

Newborns can contract gonococcal conjunctivitis during childbirth if the mother is infected.

Treatment of Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is diagnosed through urine tests or swabs from the infected area. The specimens are stained and examined under a microscope for identification.

After diagnosis, gonorrhea can be treated with a course of antibiotics following the guidelines of the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization.
