Genital Herpes & What Women Need to Know

What is Genital Herpes?

Genital herpes is an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).

There are two types of herpes:

  • Type 1: Typically found around the mouth and commonly known as oral herpes;

  • Type 2: Usually found around the genital or anal areas.

How is Herpes Transmitted?

Herpes is transmitted through close skin-to-skin contact, including unprotected sexual intercourse.

Some individuals may carry HSV without exhibiting symptoms; these individuals can still transmit the virus and cause genital herpes. Genital herpes can also be transmitted from the mouth to the genital area through oral sex.

Symptoms of Genital Herpes

The first outbreak of genital herpes is often severe, with symptoms appearing 3 to 10 days after exposure, accompanied by fever or fatigue. Blisters may appear at sites of direct skin contact during sexual activity, such as the penis in men, and the labia, clitoris, and vulva in women, or may occur around the anus, buttocks, and inner thighs. The affected areas may feel painful or burning. Recurring outbreaks are usually milder and shorter in duration.

How to Prevent Herpes Transmission

If you experience itching or tingling in the genital area or have broken blisters (sometimes painful), you should abstain from sexual activity and consult a doctor. It is advisable to have your partner examined as well.

If diagnosed with genital herpes, avoid sexual intercourse during the treatment period and use condoms after treatment until all blisters have healed.

How is Herpes Treated?

You should visit a healthcare facility near your location for examination and treatment advice. Currently, there are many effective topical and oral medications available, but it is important to follow your doctor’s instructions and avoid purchasing unregulated products that may cause adverse effects later.
